Treasure Hunt in Ebbor Gorge Saturday May 7th 2011

May’s expedition for our Young Rangers was to Ebbor Gorge, National Nature Reserve which looked and felt like a tropical rainforest on this Saturday morning with low cloud swirling around the cliffs and tree tops and the thick foliage wet from the night’s rain.

The main focus of the day was to brush up on navigation skills and the Young Rangers split into two groups: one to use compass bearings to follow a route from Wookey Hole Caves, climbing the escarpment and then skirting the outer boundary of the nature reserve; the other to set out on a treasure hunt, finding clues scattered through the gorge and leading to eatable treasure on the cliff.

Hopefully by the end of the day everyone was full of chocolate and confident in their ability to follow compass bearings.
