160 Million Years Ago

In May the AONB Young Rangers visited the Somerset Earth Science Centre for a session led by Dr Gill Odolphie on the geology of the Mendip Hills, the history of quarrying in the area and discovering how we use limestone in our everyday lives.  Then the Young Rangers enjoyed a pond dipping session and worked on a practical task to help improve the centre’s outdoor classroom area in the woods.

In the afternoon the group visited the disused Tedbury Camp where by comparing different rocks and hunting for fossils they discovered that the quarry floor was once the seabed in Jurassic times (160 million years ago).
