Mendip Hills AONB Sustainable Development Fund – Grants Awarded
The Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) has awarded SDF grants to Quarry Faces and Greentraveller – Guide to the Mendip Hills AONB.
The Quarry Faces project is documenting the history of the quarrying industry in the Mendips. Having focused on East Mendip with SDF funding it will now also cover West Mendip working with schools, local societies and community groups. An exhibition will take place at Wells Museum on 10 November, followed by a community event at the museum on December 8 and another in January 2013.
The Quarry Faces team is keen to hear from any individuals or groups in the West Mendips who would like to find out more about the project. It will also be contacting schools in the area to participate in its popular programme of workshops, a key element of which are sessions in which pupils record interviews with retired quarry workers. For more information visit www.quarryfaces.org.uk.
Also funded is Greentraveller Limited who will be producing an on line guide to the Mendip Hills AONB, with a video and Facebook campaign. Greentraveller have already produced guides for a number of AONBs and National Parks that list where to stay, visitor attractions, eating out and activities. www.greentraveller.co.uk
The guide is to promote sustainable tourism by providing comprehensive information on how visitors and residents can holiday in the Mendip Hills AONB. It will promote those businesses who have Green Tourism Business Scheme certification and or made steps towards minimising their impact on the environment, particularly with regard, energy, waste, water, sourcing local food, encouraging visitors to arrive by public transport.
The Mendip Hills AONB Unit will be working closely with Greentraveller in obtaining details and images from local businesses that it already has links with through production of its AONB Visitor Guide leaflet and tourism business familiarisation day. If you are a business with green credentials and not sure that the AONB Unit knows about you please email us – firstname.lastname@example.org
The next deadline for new SDF applications is 29th October 2012. Further details are available on our Sustainable Development Fund page together with application forms and guidance information.
