This month the AONB Advanced Young Rangers were involved in two different conservation projects. The day began with hedge planting for the Avon Wildlife Trust at Stowey. This project is creating a new hedgerow alongside a public footpath to create a wildlife corridor and provide the local school with a resource for environmental education.
The next task was an afternoon of coppicing at the Somerset Earth Science Centre. The group were met by Juliet Lawn, Education Officer at the centre, who showed them around the woodland and explained how coppicing will enhance the wildlife value of the site. The group coppiced several hazel stools which was the first stage of reintroducing a coppice rotation to the centre’s woodlands.
