The Advanced Young Rangers final activity of the year was a canoe trip along the Congresbury Yeo River. We met our instructors from Mendip Outdoor Pursuits who kitted us out with safety gear and, while still on the bank, gave us a lesson in how to use the paddle, how to work as a team to control the canoe and what to do if the canoe tips over. We were then given our canoes and, once on the water, set off on our trip up the river. As we paddled our canoes upstream we encountered the wildlife of the river and managed to get a close up view of a heron.
Our destination was a wide stretch of the river beneath a weir where there was plenty of room for canoe races and games. Everyone ended up in the water as we all managed to tip our canoes over but the river was shallow and it was a warm day so no one minded. We finished the activity with a gentle paddle back downstream to our start point and another chance to see the bird life of the river.
This was the final activity of the Advanced Young Ranger programme as due to budget cuts the AONB Unit is unable to continue the scheme from September this year and we will be focusing our resources on continuing with the core Young ranger scheme.
