Young Rangers Owl Day

YRs2On the 26th April our session was held at Callow Rock (thanks Somerset Wildlife Trust for letting us use the conference room). Our topic was owls and the first thing we did was have a talk from Chris Sperring from the Hawk and Owl Trust about their project to get an owl box in every parish in Somerset. The project has been running for about 3 years and there are only 20 parishes left out of around 350! Chris talked about owl conservation and about voles being very important to the owls’ survival. Somerset Wildlife Trust has a barn owl cam at the moment which is in one of their boxes somewhere on the Mendips. You can have a look on Live Barn Owl Nest Box Web Cam

YRsWe then had a visit from Keith and Linda Hall who helped us to built 10 barn owl boxes that will go into the project. We decorated ours ready for the owls.

After lunch we dissected owl pellets to find out what the owls eat – lots of voles.

I really enjoyed it!

Thanks to Chris, Keith, Linda and Bellatrix the barn owl for making it a great day.
