The Mendip Hills AONB’s Discovering Black Down Project has been researching ‘Starfish’ a World War II nationwide top secret project to create decoy towns to lure away German bombers from bombing cities like Bristol.
A ‘Decoy Day’ drop-in event on Saturday 9th May between 2pm and 5pm at Blagdon Village Hall will be a chance to see a short film on the Starfish project made by pupils from Blagdon Primary School. As well as the film there will be displays and information all about the decoy town on Black Down.
On Thursday May 21st at 7.30pm at Blagdon Village Hall there will be another chance to find out about the Starfish project. Chris Webster, Historic Environment Officer with the South West Heritage Trust who has researched the decoy site on Blagdon over many years, is a welcome speaker at this Blagdon History Society event to round off the Starfish project. Chris will talk about the fascinating secret history of Black Down during WWII.
