It’s a Blast at Westbury Quarry

Westbury Quarry will be open by kind permission of Alford Technologies.

Discover how the quarry has been restored for wildlife and is now used for explosive research. Watch a demo blast – safely controlled by expert Nigel Taylor. The event will include Prof Danielle Schreve giving walks and talks about her cave research. Dr Peter Hardy will give Geology tour and wildlife walks. Liz McDonnell will lead Botony walks. Mendip Cave Rescue, Butterfly Conservation and Somerset Wildlife Trust will also be in attendance. We will also be joined by the Bristol Dinosaur Project. Dry stone wall demos. Plus lots more childrens rock and fossil fun activities.

Blast will take place before 12 noon. (For your chance to push the button to explode a scrap car, tickets can be purchased on the morning for £2.50, raffle draw at 11.30am).

Liz McDonnell (Somerset Rare Plants group), will be leading wildflower walks, 10:30am and 2pm.

Dr Peter Hardy will lead a Geology walk at 10:30am and 2pm.

Parking in car park on site, off Stancombe Lane, Westbury Sub Mendip, BA5 1HT.

Booking is essential, this is a free event but a suggested donation to Mendip Rocks! of £3pp would be appreciated.
